There is something wonderfully restorative about settling in with a pair of knitting needles, good wool and a little time to yourself. This six-week hand knitting course with expert hand knitter Jean Long is an invitation to slow down, learn new skills and enjoy the simple pleasure of knitting in good company at Ballymaloe Organic Farm School. Each Friday morning, Jean will host a relaxed and welcoming knitting circle, where you can bring along your own project and work at your own pace, with Jean there to offer advice, troubleshoot tricky sections and help you take your knitting further. Whether you're returning to a long-abandoned project, looking for some guidance on a new pattern, or simply want to knit alongside others, you're very welcome. For those who would like to focus on developing particular techniques, Jean has also chosen a theme for each of the six weeks. You can follow the programme from beginning to end, building your knowledge and confidence as you go, or dip into individual sessions that catch your interest. Week 2 — Cables Learn the principles behind cable knitting and how to create beautiful, sculptural cable patterns. Knit your own way The beauty of this course is that you don't have to follow the weekly theme. Bring your own project and make the most of Jean's expertise, or join the group in exploring that week's technique. You can book the full six-week course and enjoy the continuity of learning with Jean and the group, or book individual Friday mornings according to the themes you'd most like to explore. Whether you're an experienced knitter, returning to the craft after some time away, or simply keen to spend a few peaceful Friday mornings with wool, needles and good company, come and join us at Ballymaloe.

The prestigious Ballymaloe 12 WeekCertificate Course is run three times a year, with courses beginning in January,April or May, and September.

The course is aimed at anyone with a passionate interest in food. Many of our students use the course as a springboard to become a professional chef; others use it to equip themselves with a marketable skill.

Others still take the course simply to maximize the pleasure they get from cooking at home.

Students develop a deep and detailed understanding of food and how it is produced. The emphasis is on recognising the best ingredients and knowing how to showcase them.
